The Cannelton Ghost House
(The Virginia Place)
|
This home, on the corner of Second Street and Taylor Street in Cannelton, is said to be the home of one or more ghosts! Named the Virginia Place, it was built in 1856 and was used as part of the Underground railroad before and some time after the Civil War. There was a tunnel that led to the river under the house. (The river did not have the flood wall barrier at the time.) The slaves were hidden in the basement. There was supposedly then a tunnel leading away from the house to another house in Cannelton, the Schmuck home, and that was also part of the Underground railroad. The slaves then would follow the underground railroad further into the north until it was safe for them to live their lives as free people. This story was told over and over by Delehunt, a Cannelton historian. Delehunt later wrote a history of Cannelton and one copy of this book is housed in the Cannelton Elementary library.
(Mr. William Bennett donated it to our school.) |

The current residents of the Virginia Place have seen and heard evidence of a possible ghost, including open windows that were previously closed, doors closing or opening on their own, things disappearing and then later reappearing, and more! There have been stories of actual sightings also...one is of a person who looks a bit like a soldier..and another story is of a young girl from the 1800's.
If you would like to read one story, you must go to the The Perry County Tourism website. There is a narrative, written by two Perry County teachers, that tells of a strange happening. You must decide whether you want to believe it. |
