Sugar Loaf's Cable Car

HISTORY: 

In 1912, the inauguration of an aerial way in Rio de Janeiro was included in the tourist map of Brazil, an enterprise that would become world-wide famous - the SUGAR LOAF´S CABLE CAR. Today, the vision of the cable cars is incorporated into the ‘Carioca’s landscape’. (‘Carioca’ is the name given to people born in Rio de Janeiro.)
Constructed, operated and kept by the Company Aerial Way “Sugar Loaf”, the tourist complex “Sugar Loaf” was created for the amusement of thousands of people in a privileged place by the panoramic beauty.

LANDMARK OF THE CITY:

The “Sugar Loaf”, because of its form of ogive, its privileged localization, its original access to the top, is a natural historical and tourist landmark of the city of Rio de Janeiro.

· Natural landmark: the peak of the Sugar Loaf is in the entrance of the Bay of Guanabara, being visual reference for the navigators who, of the sea or air, see it for being located in the periphery of the city.

· Historical landmark: to its feet, Estácio de Sá, on the 1st of March of 1565, established the City of São Sebastião of Rio de Janeiro. Estácio de Sá arrived in Rio de Janeiro on the 28th of February of 1565 and on the day of 1st of March entered the mounts Cara de Cão and Pão de Açúcar, as being the locals of easier defense. The place allowed not only the comment of any movement of entrance and exit of boats in the bay, but also the internal vision of all possible invaders.

· Tourist landmark: the inauguration of the cable car system of the “Sugar Loaf” in 1912 projected the name of Brazil abroad. It was the first one installed in Brazil and the third one in the world, stimulating the development of the national tourism. It is called the Tourist Jewel of the Wonderful City.
