Madame C. J. Walker was born Sarah Breedlove in 1867 in Mississippi. She was orphaned at the age of six and worked as a washerwoman throughout her youth. Through years of experimentation, she created a line of popular hair care products designed for African-American woman. In 1910 she began a factory in Indianapolis and began selling her products door to door. Many people believe she became America's first black female millionaire. She and her family built the Madame C. J. Walker Theater in Indianapolis in 1927. The programs at the center benefit over 50,000 people annually. At the theater, the programs are about arts, culture, and education for children and adults. It also provides music, dancing, and historic heritage. The theater serves over 3,500 students annually in its arts in education series. |
