James Whitcomb Riley is known as the "National Poet", "Poet of the People", "Hoosier Poet", and "Poet of Midwest People". James was born in Greenfield, Indiana, on October 7, 1849. He died on July 22, 1916. His mother and father's names were Ruben and Elizabeth Riley. Riley joined the staff of The Indianapolis Journal in 1877. He bought a home in Indianapolis. It is located at 528 Lockerbie Street in the historic Lockerbie Square area. His home has become a museum and in it they show his personal belongings such as his cane, writing desk, a picture of his dog, and his top hat. Some of the best know poems that James Whitcomb Riley wrote include "Little Orphant Annie", "When the Frost Is on the Pumpkin", and "The Raggedy Man." |
