MORRIS-BUTLER HOME

The Morris-Butler Home was built in 1865. This sixteen room house has been transferred into a museum. At the Morris-Butler Home you can learn about late 1800 Victorian architecture and what people did to be safe during the civil war. You can also learn about what people put in their homes to make them look beautiful and also some history about Indianapolis in the 19th century. The Historic Landmarks Foundation owns the house and holds education programs throughout the year. Some history about the Morris-Butler House is that in 1864, John D. Morris purchased lot 112 in Ovid Butler's subdivision. The Morris family built a house and lived in it until 1878 when they became bankrupt. Noble Chase Butler bought the house in 1881. Butler and his family lived there until 1933. Butler's daughter lived in the house until she died in 1958. After her death, the Park Avenue Gallery operated at the house. Historic Landmarks Foundation bought the house in 1962. The museum did not start until 1969. This beautiful home is located at 1204 North Park Avenue and has been called by some the best kept secret in Indianapolis.
