EITELJORG MUSEUM

The Eiteljorg Museum was opened in 1989. The museum's founder was Harrison Eiteljorg. He was an Indianapolis businessman, philanthropist and art collector. He wanted to capture the unusual aesthetic of the West. Eiteljorg acquired his enthusiasm for art at an early age, in part from his mother, an excellent and talented artist. Eiteljorg maintained that his inquisitive nature and avid interest in the areas he visited had an influence on his collecting. In fact a well-known authority on Western art Patricia Janis Broder once wrote that Eiteljorg "traveled thousands of miles to attend exhibitions and competitions to visit museums devoted to Western art and to patronize galleries specializing in painting and sculptures of the American West…" The Eiteljorg is definitely the place where you can find historic Native American art. The artwork comes from many different places from North America to the Arctic.

Some of the exhibits to see are totem poles, teepees, feathered headdresses, pottery, jewelry, clothing, and baskets. The exhibits have paintings, drawings, and sculptures. They have a variety of different artists' work of the West from the early 19th century to the present. You will experience the West translated by artists George Catlins, Albert Bierstadt, Frederic Remington, and Charles Russel. You can also view early 20th Century paintings by Ernest Blumenschein and Victor Higgins.
