The year is 2001. People here at Conner Prairie dress up like it is the year 1837. Why did they name this place after William Conner and why do the people here dress up that way? Well, that is what we are going to find out. William came to Indiana in 1837. When he was here he had 2 families, built the two-story brick house which you can see at Conner Prairie today, and helped shepherd the transition of Indiana from wilderness to settled state. This land was passed out of the Conner family hand in 1871. In 1934, the land was purchased by Eli Lilly, who began to restore and furnish the home to a vision of what it was like when William Conner lived there. Over the years, he added a log cabin, barn, and a recreated trading post. A still house, spring house, and loom house also were created. By March 1974, period buildings from all across the state of Indiana had been moved to Conner Prairie, recreating a typical early 19th century village called Prairietown. Today visitors from around the globe enjoy seeing Indiana heritage brought to life. |
