Louis Joliet Hotel

Most of the historic landmarks in Joliet were constructed of the native limestone pulled from the quarries. Unlike these other landmarks the Louis Joliet Hotel is built from red brick with the brick accented by a stone trim. When this hotel was originally built in 1927 it was one of the finest in the area. The building was eight stories tall and contained 225 rooms. These rooms were located above a two-story central lobby and lounge. Feature prominently here was a huge fireplace that included a hand-carved mantle of Bedford stone. The building was an example of the Neo-Classical Revival style of architecture. It ran until 1964 and was singled out as a national landmark in 1989. It entered the National Registry of Historic Places in 1990. Recently the city of Joliet has converted the hotel into 56 luxury apartment in an effort to revive the downtown area.
