NEWSLETTER - Volume 1 - September 2001
=====================================

Hello to all of our participants! Our project, City Quest was developed last school year in order to share with others what we like and are proud of in our cities/towns. We have since decided to extend this project to include reports from students all over the world about their own cities and what they love about them. This week, the tragedies in New York City, Washington D.C., and in Pennsylvania, have made us realize just how quickly things we take for granted can change.

We decided to write to you now, because we feel it is important to address the terrible tragedy of Tuesday, Sept. 11, and give you resources we have found out about that you can possibly use with your students to help them cope with their feelings.

*From Education World ( http://www.educationworld.com ) this week presented several features relating to the terrorist attacks the USA has suffered. You can find "SchoolDoodle" editorial cartoon at the following URL. It is an eloquent statement about the state of mind of children everywhere and the feelings they are dealing with.

The following link includes links to resources intended to help speak with young people about these events. http://www.educationworld.com/a_curr/curr369.shtml

*The National Education Association has published their Crisis Communications Guide and Tool Kit at: http://www.nea.org/crisis/

*Alice Yucht, Teacher-LibrarianHeritage Middle School, Livingston NJ has put together a list of resources that teachers and parents can use in discussing last week's events with students. See this at: http://members.home.net/hmslibrary/coping.html

Here is a place on the web where students can send in support to students who were impacted by this tragedy:

*Global SchoolNet has set up a space on the web to allow kids around the world to send their messages of hope, support, and condolences to those affected by the September 11th tragedy.
Scanned drawings and digital photos that convey hope and support will also be accepted. These messages will be compiled and shared with the schools directly impacted by this disastrous act of terrorism. To learn more about the KidsShareHope group, please visit http://www.globalschoolnet.org  and to start sending messages to members of this group, simply send email to kidssharehope@yahoogroups.com

One more thing about the tragedy of last Tuesday...it is absolutely wonderful to hear from fellow teachers from all over the world that on Friday, the USA Red, White, and Blue Day- other countries around the world held a special program in honor of those who died on Sept. 11 and in hope and prayer for those who are missing.
We are a global society, and what happened on Sept. 11 was a global tragedy. It is great to know that we, the civilized nations of the world, are standing together in unity and will work together to see that something like this does not ever happen anywhere again!

We wish to thank you for joining our project and we certainly hope that all is well with you. You can view the participants list at:
http://www.pabohaarlem.nl/cityquest/tourist/e-tourist.html
We are ready to start with publishing your reports on our project website.
If you already have reports published on the Internet, let us know and then we can link to them. If that is the case, let us know and we can send to you the City Quest logo to use for the link to our project on your site.... so visitors can see you are an official City Quest participant. Otherwise...we can publish your reports for you on the City Quest site, simply email them to us and attach any photos and/or drawings using .jpg or .gif

We believe that your city, town, or village is special and we want to help you tell others about how special it is to you and why. Please e-mail us if you have any questions or concerns.

Peace, understanding, and love to all,

Joan, Rene, and Hajime
