NEWSLETTER - Volume 10 - October/November 2002
=====================================
Hello to all of our participants!
We hope that all is well with you and your students.
We are saddened by the tragic event of the Earthquake in Italy which took the lives of twenty-six elementary students and teachers. We wish to send our condolenses to all involved. We hope and pray that a tragedy such as this will never occur again! If you wish to send cards or letters or drawings to the families and friends of the victims...you may do so by contacting Joan Goble at
dgoble@psci.net and she will forward your message to Lina Rechichi, a teacher from Italy and she will see that your cards and letters reach those who would most benefit from them.
We would like to welcome our newest members to City Quest. The English Emphasis School in Novouralsk, Russia is our newest participating school. Another new participating school is Three Oaks Elementary School in Three Oaks, Michigan USA. We welcome the 4th grade students of Jeanne Carter.
Also, Cannelton Elementary School is doing a new research project on their town. It is to
highlight a special tree growing there...a Moon Tree! What is a Moon Tree? It is a tree that was grown from a seed that was taken to the Moon and back on Apollo 14! We will keep you updated on this research report! If you want to learn more about Moon Trees...go to NASA's website about them at:
http://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/planetary/lunar/moon_tree.html
We would like it if you all can keep us informed of your works and projects in your communities. Please e-mail us about your progress. If any of you participants from past years are doing new reports we would also like to hear about those! :-)
This is the time of year in many countries when festivals and celebrations of holidays take place. What is going on in your community? One great way to learn about the culture of new places is to learn about the holidays traditions and celebrations of these new places. We would like to hear about yours. Please e-mail us with holiday traditions and celebrations happening in your town and/or country and we will make a special page on City Quest for them. **We do know that soon it will be time for St.
Maarten's Day in The Netherlands. In the USA Halloween just past and Thanksgiving is coming soon. It will also soon be time for St. Nicholas to visit many boys and girls in many countries. Please share with us what events or holidays or special happenings are coming in your town. E-mail us at:
cq@digitalschool.nl and we will be sure to mention these also in our next newsletter.
We have special news! Joan Goble and Rene de Vries, cohost teachers of City Quest (along with Hajime Yanase from Japan) were able to attend and present about City Quest at a conference on Education held in Tianjin, China last month! City Quest and our other online collaborative projects were very well received! We have many photos about this visit...go to either Joan Goble's school website of photos at:
http://www.siec.k12.in.us/cannelton/elementary/schoolnews/0203/china.htm
and also Rene's school photo page at: http://www.rene.digitalschool.nl
*Again, if you need ideas for your reports on your town, try visiting other reports that have been turned in to City Quest.

Another place to visit is a website that features holiday and festival information and other cultural issues of several different countries is the Folklore and Family Traditions Website:
http://www.humnet.ucla.edu/humnet/folklore/peter/index.html
Another great website which can take you all over the world (Far and Near as it is titled) is at:
http://www.far-and-near.com/
These both can give you inspiration to help you and your students with their reports.
We believe that your city, town, or village is special and we want to help you tell others about how special it is to you and why. Please e-mail us if you have any questions or concerns.
