NEWSLETTER - Volume 7 - April-May 2002
=====================================
Hello to all of our participants!
We know that many of you are looking at the end of the school year and we hope that your school year ends well and that you have a wonderful summer break.
Again, we hope that those of you who are still working on your reports are doing well. Let us know if you need any quidance. We are very happy to have received the reports we have so far. If you have not had a chance to see them...go to our Tourist section of City Quest at:
http://www.pabohaarlem.nl/cityquest/index.html
City Quest now has twenty registered participating schools! They are from USA, The Netherlands, Japan, Canada, South Africa, and Italy. We wish to tell you about a new report added this week to City Quest...a great community report by Amy Norton's fifth grade class at Rome City School in Rome City, Indiana USA. You can read about their school, Sylvan Lake, Gene Stratton Porter's Garden, Sylvan Springs, and more at:
http://romecity.eastnoble.net/norton/cityquest/
Well done!
We also wish to announce a new link to a great community study which was made by a third grade class of Martel Elementary School from Lewiston, Maine - USA. To see their wonderful project, a Cyberfair (Global Schoolhouse) project, go to:
http://www.lewiston.k12.me.us/~dletourneau/localspecialties/index.htm
This is great fun to tour!
Mentioning Cyberfair, if you are interested in seeing other community study projects, then one great place to go is the Global Schoolhouse website. Global Schoolhouse, a home for collaboration in education, hosts the annual International Challenge called Cyberfair, which highlights communities around the world. The theme is usually "Share and Unite", however, as a tribute to the Sept. 11 tragedy, the theme this year is "Care and Unite". To view the many wonderful entries of this year's Cyberfair - which include categories such as Local Leaders, Community Groups/Special Populations, Businesses and Organizations, Local Specialties, and more - go to:
http://www.gsh.org/cf/index.html
One note....City Quest was a Gold Winner in the Cyberfair '01. :-)
We wish to tell you all once again about a special way your students can take an active part in helping the innocent victims of war in Afghanistan. Friendship Through Education (
http://www.friendshipthrougheducation.org/
) is promoting a project which your school can participate in to help out children from war torn Afghanistan! It is called the SOS: Schools Outfitting Schools project. It involves schools raising money for UNICEF School-In-A-Box educational kits. These kits will be sent to Afghanistan. Participating schools in America will receive a special certificate honoring their participation. You can read all about this at the Friendship Through
Education website above. One wonderful thing about this is, now girls , who were oppressed by the Taliban regime before, are finally allowed to attend schools. Schools can become part of their successful future by contributing.
What special programs did your town or school do for Earth Day? If you have a compelling story and would like to share it with us, we would be happy to place it in our next newsletter or if you have a nice link we could place it on our tourism page. Let us know. One of our host schools, Cannelton Elementary in Cannelton, Indiana had a special visitor April 22. Evelyn Gallardo, photojournalist and author of the children's book Among the Orangutans, visited and shared with the students her experiences working with orangutan scientist and orangutan project leader Dr. Birute Galdikas in the forests of Borneo. Her message theme was "Follow Your Dream". She brought this theme home to the students in her wonderful presentation and the students, parents, teachers, and other community members in the audience could not get enough! If you would like to see photos from this presentation visit Cannelton Elementary's School News on her at:
www.siec.k12.in.us/cannelton/elementary
We believe that your city, town, or village is special and we want to help you tell others about how special it is to you and why. Please e-mail us if you have any questions or concerns.
