NEWSLETTER - Volume 6 - March 2002
=====================================
Hello to all of our participants!
We hope you are doing well with your reports. We are very happy to have received the reports we have so far. If you have not had a chance to see them...go to our Tourist section of City Quest at:
http://www.pabohaarlem.nl/cityquest/index.html
When you look these over, you can see many creative ways to make your reports. One way is to make tourist pamphlets (see
Charles Quentin School - Lisa Peterson's students - Lake Zurich,
Illinois.)
What sort of special celebrations are getting ready to happen in your town or city? Do you have special celebrations that you would like to share about with others? This is also something City Quest would like to publish for you!
Just have your students write about the special celebrations in your town or city, they can also draw or paint about them and we will publish them for you.
Below are some special celebrations that are happening soon in some of our participating schools/cities.
In Haarlem, The Netherlands - in April - and in other parts of the country - Spring is celebrated with a flower parade that comes through town! There are flowers all around, and even flowers handed out to you by the Dutch "flower girls". At the end of the blooming period, there is a huge parade held in Haarlem. Beautiful floats are created using the petals from the tulip and daffodil flowers.
Mr. Rene de Vries' class wrote about the flower parade in April 1997. You can see that report on-which has beautiful photos on it- at:
http://www.wadden.vuurwerk.nl/info/flowers1.htm
All across the USA and many parts of the world, Earth Day is celebrated. Earth Day is April 22. What happens on Earth Day depends on the town. There will be parades, special clean up programs, other programs such as butterfly release program, tree plantings, and so much more! In Cannelton, students will take large trash bags and go around to collect litter that is in their town. They will also have a special event this year! They will host a special guest, Evelyn Gallardo, author and illustrator! She is the author of the book Among The Orangutans. She will be speaking to the students about the topic: "Follow Your Dream". We will publish photos and tell about the event on our school website after she visits. If you want to read about it,we will have a link in our April newsletter to share this. :-)
Friendship Through Education ( http://www.friendshipthrougheducation.org/
) is promoting a project which your school can participate in to help out children from war torn Afghanistan! It is called the SOS: Schools Outfitting Schools project. It involves schools raising money for UNICEF School-In-A-Box educational kits. These kits will be sent to Afghanistan. Participating schools in America will receive a special certificate honoring their participation. You can read all about this at the Friendship Through Educaiton website above. One wonderful thing about this is, now girls , who were oppressed by the Taliban regime before, are finally allowed to attend schools. Schools can become part of their successful future by contributing.
Please share with us some of the wonderful plans your city/town or school has planned soon! We will publish this for you in the newsletter, and if you have reports we can publish them on the Tourist section of City Quest. :-)
We believe that your city, town, or village is special and we want to help you tell others about how special it is to you and why. Please e-mail us if you have any questions or concerns.
