NEWSLETTER - Volume 12 - January / February 2003
=====================================

Happy 2003!  We hope all is well with you and your students.
We are excited about the new year and wish to share with you the news below:

NEW PARTICIPANTS!

We wish to welcome the following new participants to City Quest:

*North Shore County Day School in Winnetka, IL - a report on Neighborhoods of Chicago -

*Craig Academy in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania - a report on specialty places in and around Pittsburgh - contact Carla Sproull.

*Lima West Middle School in Lima, Ohio - a report on Lima - 5th and 8th graders - contact teacher Dianne Bollinger.

*Three Oaks Elementary School in Three Oaks, Michigan - a report on special places in Three Oaks - by 4th graders - contact Jeanne Carter.

NEW ADDITIONS!

Recently we added more photos from our visits with each other.  You can view them in the Visiting Teachers section. :-)

Travel Buddies - two of our schools are exchanging travel buddies!  This is a great activity/project for sharing about your communities!  You can send a journal with your buddy so that the students can write about the buddy's adventures while visiting.  When we have done this we have also sent a camera (disposable) but, now that most schools have digital cameras that really is not necessary.  You can e-mail photos of what is happening with the buddy easily.  Students can learn so much from this experience!  If you want to take a look at our three-way school exchange which we had three years ago, go to City Quest's Travel Buddy area (see our site map) and read all about it.  If you wish for us to match you up with another school in City Quest for this kind of exchange, just let us know.  We would love to expand our Travel Buddy section to include your stories as well.

NEWS!  NEWS!

Last week Rene, cohost teacher of City Quest from The Netherlands, was able to come visit Cannelton Elementary (Joan's school) in Cannelton, Indiana!  It was wonderful to see Mr. Rene (That is the name his students call him) again!  Soon we will have photos to share of his visit on our site.  Keep watching the Visiting Teachers area for this update.

Global Chat!!!  Soon we will be hosting our first Global Chat for 2003!  This chat will be held two to three times during a 24 hour period in order to include as many of our City Quest participating schools as possible.  Our topic will be "How we celebrate the New Year" .  We know that your students will have a lot to share about this!  We also want to discuss recent holiday celebrations (such as, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in USA).  So, again, keep an eye looking for an announcement e-mail coming from City Quest announcing the registration information for this chat.

Chinese New Year is coming up.  Cannelton Elementary students (Cannelton, Indiana) and Primary School De Wadden students (Haarlem, The Netherlands) will do a virtual celebration of this together.  We will be making poems and sayings with traditional Chinese characters and sending these to each other. We plan on taking photos of this to share with everyone here on City Quest site.  Are any of you doing something special for Chinese New Year? Again, please share, we will publish what you did in our next newsletter.

Actually, we invite your students to report on how your holidays are celebrated. We want to hear about Kwanzaa, Chanukah, Feast of St. Lucia, and more. This is a great way to share your culture with the rest of the world.

Is there something special happening in your town, village, or city you wish to add to your already existing reports? Again, we are happy to assist you in any way we can if you would like to add to your reports.  Let us know.

* Again, if you need ideas for your reports on your town, try visiting other reports that have been turned in to City Quest. http://www.cityquest.digitalschool.nl/indexparticipants.htm

We believe that your city, town, or village is special and we want to help you tell others about how special it is to you and why. Please e-mail us if you have any questions or concerns.
