NEWSLETTER - Volume 13 - March / April 2003
=====================================

We hope you are doing well with your reports. We are very happy to have received the reports we have so far. If you have not had a chance to see them...go to our Tourist section of City Quest at:
http://www.pabohaarlem.nl/cityquest/index.html
When you look these over, you can see many creative ways to make your reports. One way is to make tourist pamphlets (see Charles Quentin School - Lisa Peterson's students - Lake Zurich, Illinois.)

NEWS! NEWS!

Ideas for reports on your city or town include any festivals or celebrations you may be having or have had in recent months. For instance, students in Cannelton, Indiana report that there will be a Dogwood tree festival happening during the weekend of April 27-28. During this festival there are many celebrations with music, museum exhibits, and more. They will try to send us some photos and a report on this soon.

Cannelton Elementary also recently held a special celebration for a special tree it has called a Moon Tree. Moon Trees are trees which were grown from seeds taken to the moon and back on Apollo 14! They have created a website on this which we will add to the Cannelton Elementary section of City Quest. You can go directly to the website of the Moon Tree and celebration at:
http://www.siec.k12.in.us/cannelton/moontree/moontree.htm
So, if you have any celebrations happening please send us an email or a report about it...we would for you to tell the world about them.

City Quest was recently featured as a Global Project to join in the April issue of Classroom Connect Newsletter. :-) This is the second time it was featured there, it was also featured in Feb. 2002 as a Global Project to join. We are very honored that City Quest was featured there.

Travel Buddies are great for learning about other places! One example is Buster the Teddy Bear...the travel buddy from Pine Ridge Elementary in South East Dubois School Corp. in Indiana. Their bear has been to Taiwan, India, Japan, Italy, England, and many more places! You can read all about his wonderful travels at his website at: http://www.sedubois.k12.in.us/~pkluesner/Buster.htm
Another great travel buddy project is Flat Stanley! Many schools have hosted or sent him...and Annette Lamb, Education Professor at Indiana University/Purdue University (IUPUI) and co webmaster of Eduscapes, has a great project with him which you can read about at: http://eduscapes.com/flat/
We think you should think about using a travel buddy exchange as a way to get to know other cities and cultures. One more example is one we ourselves had with each other (Cannelton, Indiana and Haarlem, The Netherlands) along with a school in Hiyoshi, Japan. We had a three-way buddy exchange and had so much fun with it! You can see this exchange at City Quest City Hall at: http://www.cityquest.digitalschool.nl/vrworld/cityhall.html

In Haarlem, The Netherlands - in April - and in other parts of the country - Spring is celebrated with a flower parade that comes through town! There are flowers all around, and even flowers handed out to you by the Dutch "flower girls". At the end of the blooming period, there is a huge parade held in Haarlem. Beautiful floats are created using the petals from the tulip and daffodil flowers.
Mr. Rene de Vries' class wrote about the flower parade in April 1997. You can see that report on-which has beautiful photos on it- at: http://www.wadden.vuurwerk.nl/info/flowers1.htm

* Again, if you need ideas for your reports on your town, try visiting other reports that have been turned in to City Quest. http://www.cityquest.digitalschool.nl/indexparticipants.htm

We believe that your city, town, or village is special and we want to help you tell others about how special it is to you and why. Please e-mail us if you have any questions or concerns.
