The schools before
Hiyoshi Elementary School

We heard from our parents that before our school was combined, there were three Elementary schools in Hiyoshi. We are very interested in the schools, so we decided to investigate about the schools before our school was built in 1883.

The origin of our school is "Genrin Gikou", "Shinsei Gikou", "Shidou Gakkou", Kangaku Gikou". The schools were built in 1873. Then three years later, "Hiyoshi Gakkou" was established in the temple Zoufuku. In 1904, all the schools were combined to the "Hiyoshi Gakkou".

In 1947, "Hiyoshi First Elementary School" and "Hiyoshi Second Elementary School" and "Branch School in Hanbara" were established. Our parents lived in Hiyoshi at that time had learned in the three schools.
They told to us about the school life at that time.
- "Branch School in Hanbara"
About the year 1965, the school had two combined classes. 1st grade and 2nd grade, 3rd grade and 4th grade were combined. After 5th grade, they went to "Hiyoshi First Elementary School". In the winter, they used wood burning stoves. The mothers of the students came to school everyday and cooked miso soup by turns. When we are using for the practice of "Sanbasou". "Sanbasou" is a kind of original music and dance in this village. The "Sanbasou" was used when some people played with marionettes, or their own dance. It is a traditional play continued for about 350 years. In the summer vacation, we go to there and do radio gymnastic exercises at 6:30am almost every weekday. (In Japan, most of the students of Elementary School and Junior High School go to school or park near their house, and do radio gymnastic exercises at 6:30 am almost every day in the summer vacation.)

There was no bus then, so some students walked a long way. Then the students who must walk more than 8 kilometers were allowed some money for their shoes. Most of the shoes were straw sandals or geta (wooden clogs). It was the everyday job that making of the straw sandals.

"Branch School in Hanbara" was closed in 1982. Then "Hiyoshi First Elementary School" and "Hiyoshi Second Elementary School" were closed in March 1983. Then our school "Hiyoshi Elementary School" opened in April 1983.
