The
Theatre of Haarlem
We interviewed Mr. Rutger de Lange. He is employee and head of the Technical Service of the Theatre of Haarlem
The History
The Theatre was built in 1917. It opened its doors in 1918. So our theatre was built during World War
One.
The Place
In former days the place where our theatre is located was a park. So the park was sacrificed in order to be able to build the
theatre.
Inside
There are about 700 seats in our theatre. But of course, when there is an orchestra and a lot of technical
equipment, then less people can visit the performance. When all seats are
available, then 730 people can watch a play or musical. In the auditorium is a huge
chandelier.
Transformations
Till now they painted the inside of the theatre four times in different
colors. Soon they will start painting the inside of the building in the original colors
again. The old colors are red and brown. They never changed anything on the
chandelier.
Behind the scenes
Behind the stage are the dressingrooms. The dressingrooms are not very big. There is also a store room where you can put all the props you need for this or other performances.
There is a huge door at the backside of the theatre. They use this door to transport the attributes which are necessary for
plays.
Performances
The best-sold play in the year 2000 was The Snowman. At the time we did this interview, already more than 10,000 people had visited this show. It is a Christmas show and it is a very nice and good show.
