Hannie Schaft, a woman in resistance against the Germans.
Hannie Schaft was born on September 16, 1920 in Haarlem. Her given name is Jannetje Johanna. Hannie had a 5 years older sister, but she died in December 1927 because of diphtheria. Her father and mother were both teachers, but her mother stopped working after the birth of the children.
A favorite discussion topic at home was politics. They were socialists.
When Hannie finished Highschool, she started to study Law in Amsterdam.
When the Germans attacked Holland on May 10, 1940, Hannie and her fellow students went into the underground resistance.
After her study, Hannie went back to Haarlem and lived with her parents. She also stayed an active member of the resistance. She helped to search for hiding places for Jewish people, and she helped make fake passports. She also was active with attacks on German properties and helped commit sabotage.
On March 21, 1945 Hannie got arrested by the Germans on the Rijksstraatweg. She just was trying to bring resistance newspapers to IJmuiden. Finally the German Secret Service (The Siegerheitsdienst) caught the Woman With Red Hair (Das Rothaarige Madel), her nickname given by the Germans.
She first was brought to the Ripperdakazerne in Haarlem, and then she was brought to the Amstelveenseweg in Amsterdam. The Germans questioned her for days and days. Finally she admited she killed van Langendijk (a traitor). The German, Willy Lages, then sentenced her to dead.
On April 17, 1945 (just two weeks before the liberation of Holland!) Hanny Schaft was taken out of her cell in Amsterdam and the Germans brought her to Overveen.
Near the small lake in the dunes were already hundreds of resistance people killed by the Germans.
The German Schmitz was walking behind Hannie and he missed trying to shoot her through her head. So Maarten Kuyper took his machine gun and shot Hannie dead.
