In 1282 they started to build
the castle. The castle is finished by Willem 1, Lord of Brederode
in 1292.
Later, in 1351, the castle was conquered and destroyed by the
"Kabeljouw" and their leader Gijsbrecht van Nijenrode.
The people of the castle had to surrender and the castle was very
damaged.
Between 1354 and 1426 the castle was rebuild. The South part of
the castle again was destroyed by the "Kabeljouw".
In 1464 the castle was completely renovated.
In 1492 people came to the castle to plunder it. The castle was
plundered by German soldiers. Since that time, nobody lived in the
castle anymore. In
1573, during the war of Haarlem, the castle was plundered and set
on fire by the Spanish soldiers. Nobody took care anymore of the
castle, so the sand of the dunes started to cover it.
In 1679 the last Lord of Brederode died and the castle became a
property of the Counts of Holland. Later the ruin became the
property of the Dutch State.
In the 19th century they started to renovate the castle again. During
the summer of 1998, mrs. Joan Goble (Cannelton Elem. school) paid
a visit at the castle. In January 2001, Mr. Hajime (Hiyoshi,
Japan) tried to visit the castle, but it was unfortunately closed.
