De Adriaan
Windmill in the center of Haarlem

History
The Adriaan was for a part renovated, but on April 23, 1932 flames came out of the windmill. After 8 minutes the firemen were present. The windmill was one big fire. It was impossible to save it. The fire men were not able to put out the fire. They never found out the cause of the fire.

Rebuilding
On Tuesday, November 14, 2000, at the beginning of the day, there was no windmill on the border of the river Spaarne. But just a few hours later they began to rebuild the proud, 28 meters high mill at the beginning of the Papentorenvest. The new Adriaan was within just a few hours again the beautiful building on a stone substruction, at the same spot as where the original windmill stood. The view of the the center of Haarlem was finally complete again.
It almost went wrong with putting the top of the windmill on its place. But luckily it went right and so the builders and sponsors could drink an original Adriaan beer to celebrate the rebuilding.

Targets of the Mills.
The Adriaan was till the year 1820 an industrial mill. In the year 1820 the mill was sold to a tabacco-merchant for only 1,650 Dutch guilders. Till the year 1865 it was a snuff mill. Then, till the fire, it was a corn mill.
In 1925 it was bought by the association of the Dutch Windmills (for 12,100 Dutch guilders).
Before the year 1600 mills were mainly used for grinding corn and for pumping away the water out of the polders. However, because of the increased economy and the industrial revolution, mills are nowadays used for several purposes. For instance for brewing beer, for sawing or grinding of paint.
