Yes, the Ohio River is so important to the history of Cannelton...if it were not for the river we would not be here!
The children are writing about different historical things...and most of them have something about the river in them!
Many of our interviews also mention the river. So, what I might do to sort of put it all together for the river portion of the
Cannelton reports is compile river information from their reports. :-)
Yes, I like it that we are all three going to have old stories on our site!
The stories are the echoes of our past...and we hear them over and over again in the present and our children's
children will hear them in the future...handed down from generation to generation!
;-)
This is fantastic!

I'm very interested in the story about the river and your rigion. How about to enter each regions' old stoty? I think Rene will be able to enter the story about flood. And as for me, we will be able to enter the old town that is hundred years ago. |

GREAT IDEAS!!!
we have several historical (well historical to us is 100 years or more old) and we have stories told about many of them by our elder people of the town...can we use the elder people of the town as our important people?? Would that be ok?
Anyway, we can try to have ten reports with stories in most of them (short stories) about them. One thing too, we have the river near us, the Ohio...and it of course is an important part of our history. There have been many floods from it and the bridge to cross to Kentuck is in Cannelton and the barges on it, etc...many stories there.
Well, let me know, and yes, I like the idea of the travel buddies being a part of our project, our collaboration coming alive through them! They are our ambassadors!
:-) more later, Joan |

Ohayou gozaimus to you both!
It is great to hear from you!
Yes, I like the idea of the flash and using the travel buddies that way!!!
You both have such wonderful ideas!
Music is great to use ...and I like the idea of the crane you have, Hajime.
:-) My students were enchanted with that story of the Golden Crane.
How is Bonnie?
Bouken Totoro has been going home with each student in my classroom...and
has been to nearly all of their homes. They have been taking photos, I hope
they turn out.
;-)
I will process them for you and place them in a picture album for you.
yes, Rene, your voice can cause weird things to happen! I will be sure
tosend your voice to Hajime on Monday - so Hajime, open it with care!
(actually, I think Rene is a very good singer!) Also, it was nice to hear
your voice, Hajime. ;-) Oh, can you record yourself saying your name, so I
can say it correctly to my students.
My name is fairly easy, I will try to record myself telling you how to say
it.
well, I need to make dinner, but I just wanted to tell you I like these
ideas!
bye and have a nice weekend!

I will tell to my students all the things you wrote. Anyway, the song has

- I want to enter about crane. It includes songs, folding papers, students'
arts and story. Is it possible the 6 characters go to art period or music
hall?
- How about to use Lady, Jumbo, Bonnie, Bouken-totoro and and some buddies
for the characters.
- I can make Flash movie. Shall we make a starting and ending movie?
I must go to university today and tomorrow.... Have a good weekend!

Friends, we are working on the sound files right now... so that will be fine. However.. before we continue, we need to come up with a kind of story board for the virtual city tour... my students love the idea of let the 6 characters wandering the city, searching for secret messages, and so on... We also have to come up with an idea how many buildings/stories each grade will make. It is possible to make a kind of Quest... and my students would like to design it and we also would like to start asap.... If you two agree with that, than we want to start asap with a first setup for this site... and therefor we need some practical information like: how many buildings , what kind of buildings? what kind of stories? Let me give you an example form y own grade... this is what my students came up with for this project... we want to make the whole site in three (!) languages... we will start with desinging and we will do the rough English part... then Joan has to do a spell check on the English part, to improve the english part. And then Hajime can translate it into Japanese. And for the stories of Hajime... it goes the other way around.. he starts with his Japanese stories, he will make a rough english translation, Joan will improve that and I will translate the stories from Hajime from English into Dutch. FURTHER... my students love the idea of doing the virtual town with our river Spaarne in it. We want to start with an old water pump at the beginning of the river and we want to end with the statue of the boy who saved the Netherlands by sticking his finger in the dike (a famous story about Holland, but it did not happend in real). In between we will take and situate some famous buildings on the borders of the river and we also will include some famous and pretty bridges... Joan knows, she was two years ago in Haarlem. Then... our next plan is to pretend that the buildings we situate on the Spaarne borders are owned by wellknown Haarlem citizens.. and my students will go to those real persons (like the major of our town, a wellknow TV personality for children, a Olympic champion, a songwriter, and so on) to get an interview with that person and to ask him/her more about that building. This information has to be short ! One of the main things I learned after the last ThinkQuest we did, was the fact that people do not like to read long reports on the Internet. The reports have to be short and to the point. We tried that with our project Circle round the Grote Markt and I guess that was one of the reasons we won grand price. I think we need to set a maximum of reports each school will deliver... what about 10 each, so we have total 30 reports we can use for the Quest.... if you agree, please send me asap a description of the buildings or other places you want to include.. so that we can start with the designing of the virtual city and the navigation system for it and starting to make a kind of story for the project. OK, I will stop now and continue after your answers ;-0 Have fun, Rene |

Konnichiwa ! It is really now Oct. 25, ! I need to go to bed!
Well, I just wanted to say that I will be trying to get some kind of recording to you soon...and...we are nearly finished with our Holiday reports. It has taken us longer than expected because of so many interruptions! (like half days because of teacher inservice and Parent teacher conferences)..and now I have to be gone Thurs. through Sunday at a conference in Denver...but hopefully things will settle down some after that!
ok, I will submit this now,

Sorry for being quiet a few days.. my illness is over now and first thing I will do is going to record my students: hello, we are the students... etc. in both English and Dutch. We also would like to say it in Japanese, but we never tried that before and we have no one who can help us so Hajime has to guide us.
We also will tape the Fly song in Dutch and I will teach my students the English song "I like the mountains".
Next week, we have vacation and I will make preparations for my students to let them make reports on the historical places on the borders of the river Spaarne. One of the buildings is the Teylers Museum, the oldest museum of the Netherlands (and probably of Europe). Last year my students already did a report on it... it is a part of the Internet project Circle Round the Grote Markt. More soon, need to get ready for school. Rene |

Yes, Hajime, it is fine ...I have not had time to record either! We have had so many special days at school. Today in the afternoon we had a movtivational speaker/presenter in to talk to the students about working hard, setting goals, working for those goals, and not quitting. :-) I believe the students really enjoyed him. (It helped that he used the game of basketball ...doing many trickes with basketballs...in between what he said about doing well in school and in life. :-)

Yes, Hajime, that is fine...really! When you record your student voices...could you also record your voice again, this time saying your name? :-) We want to make sure we are saying it correctly. I will try to remember to do the same. I hope you received the movie file (it is short, but unfortunately it uses up a lot of space (one disk full)...so, I wonder if you received it ok.
The reports keep coming in about the holidays. :-) We are also getting reports for historic buildings here. :-) We look forward to hearing about yours. Hajime, thanks, and Rene, please we hope you feel better soon!

Yes, how quickly time flies! Our students are also researching temples, old schools(there are two elementary schools in old days), and many things about Hiyoshi. Sorry to late to send you my students voice. We don't have a time to record yesterday because of our long meeting with the headmaster from another school. I will send today. |

I can hardly believe it is already Oct. 10!
Can you two? Ok, this will work out fine, Hajime. Oh...tomorrow is our Grandparents Day...it is school wide, with an assembly and then the Grandparents come to the classrooms to visit and then they eat lunch with their grandchildren. It should be fun for all. If I can I will take digitals of it. Today my Media Club interviewed another grandparent, Mr. Bennett, who was principal of our school for over 40 years. He is fun to listen to! We will add his story to the stories we already had from him.
As soon as I can I will record the message - with us trying to say it in Japanese and we will also say it in English. We want to say it in Dutch also, so , when you are feeling better, Rene, maybe you can record your voice for us also...and I will record my voice for you both too.
Then we will have our students voices. GREAT FUN! - Joan |

We want it to sound as close to the right way as we can. We have a CD with the lyrics so we hope to have it correct soon. Rene, the Dutch Fly song, should be ready next Monday. :-) bye for now, and have a nice Sunday both of you! Joan |

Hello, Hoi, Konnichiwa to you two! Hajime, everything you have sent to us is great! The video and the photos and the papers! You are a great partner! Once again, let me thank you! and Rene, thank you once again for setting up this message place!!! I hope to contribute more myself soon. :-) My students are nearly all finished with the reports on holidays and I will post those soon to you both. I will also try to get the voices recorded of my students sending a nice greeting to you all. We want to try to speak in Japanese and in Dutch, as well as English of course, the basic message of : Hi, we are Cannelton Elementary School. We are happy to be in this project with you. This project will be fun. Goodbye for now from Mrs. Goble's class. So, now, I wonder how to say it in Dutch and in Japapnese? Can you send me sound files of this in your languages? We will send it in English to you also. :-)

Sounds good! I want to hear the Dutch Fly song and English song. My students will also want to listen to your song. As for Japanese song, there are many Japanese traditional songs. The scales of Japanese traditional songs are different from the scales of Western songs. Some of my students are learning regional very old dance with a song, however I've never seen the dance. Old people live in there are teaching sometimes. The song is called "Bunraku". |

This is the same as what I posted on the general discussion page:
Konnichiwa and Hoi! I am so happy that we are doing this!
I cannot wait to share with the students the nice paper you sent, Hajime, and the nice photos too. Rene, remember the song you sang to my class a couple of years ago? It was about mountains and flowers? Where did you get that song? Where did it come from? That would be a good one to use I think, for us to teach to your students (well, your students may already know it) and for us to teach to Hajime's students, and then your students can maybe teach us (my students and Hajime's students)the Dutch Fly song, and we would like to learn a song of Hajime's . We found a Japanese song that is considered a New Year's song, but if you have a nice one you want us to learn, we can do that one instead or with this New Year's song. :-)
I mentioned in an email I think...I have had my students looking into the story behind some of our holidays...I am not sure what they are coming up with...but soon (this week) we should have some information for you on this. Also, we are gathering some background information on some of our more historical buildings in Cannelton, and we will get that information to you two soon also.
Have a wonderful week!

Hi you two! I am so happy! We had a great interview with Charles Gerber. We really did, even though the batteries on our tape recorder quit during the middle of it, we still feel we got enough to have a nice bit for our project! We also have several nice old photographs to use, and we have a few photos he gave us to scan. :-)
He has a small museum in his house, believe it or not, and he has invited my media club to come to see the relics there...many of them have to do with the history of Cannelton! He is 80 years old and doing very well.
Hajime, Bonnie should arrive at your school by Monday or Tuesday. Let us know when she arrives. I had the students put her things together in the box...they put in some candies for your students and some pencil top erasers that are funny things like happy faces, moons, stars, pencils, boxes with ribbons, well, you will see. We hope you like what we sent. You have a surprise in there too, Hajime, from me :-). It is to confirm that Global Schoolhouse Cyberfair 2001 is definitely happening!
We all make a great team!
How do I spell the word for goodbye in Japanese?

Thank you Hajime. Yes, you are right. I certainly hope that my school can survive this crisis.
Plans for this project...
We are interviewing more of our grandparents, like we did last year for the ATT project "The Way We Were".
In fact, we have one coming on Thursday who was not interviewed for it at all...so his stories are all new!
Rene, what do you think...do you think we could use the interviews that we had last year and include them in our project? What do you think of keeping the basic idea the same? Hajime, do you like having interviews of grandparents on our website? We could call it "How it was Then"
or "Stories from Then" ...well, that sounds a bit different...maybe we could call it something else. Anyway, we could have a section with real stories from the voices of the people who lived it. My media club wants to help....is that ok? There are at the moment 18 in that club (but the number varies, depending on who can stay for the meeting). ok, well, I will send this. Oh, here is an idea of what to call the part of our project about the stories of the past: Echoes of.....
and we can put the name of our town, like: Echoes of Cannelton. That is a project idea we had last year, but never did anything with it so, it is ok to use that idea if you like. I hope both of you have a nice week! We have been taking ISTEP tests this week (state mandated testing) and I need to give out the report cards tomorrow, so I have a lot of work. I will write more here later,

I posted this on the Long Term plans...but it also fits here:
Our project can be something like Then and Now...we can have a Then space, and talk about our towns and countries in the past...and a Now space, where we tell about it now and its future. I do want to inform Hajime of some of what is going on here in Cannelton...Rene already knows most of this...but, our school, Cannelton City Schools, may not be able to continue after this year :-( The reason is because our numbers are so low (student numbers)...and the only way to keep the school going is with the money the state gives per student. So, because of our low enrollment, and also because of some money our school already owes our state government, we may not be able to keep going! :-( We are ok this year, and I hope maybe next year..but after that, who knows! So, this town of ours, Cannelton, Indiana may lose its school system....and that would be so very sad! Cannelton is the oldest community here in Perry County really I think...and the school building I teach in is 132 years old! Nearly 133! I think it will last forever! :-) I hope so anyway. so, there is lots of history here in this building and in this town. The townspeople hope to keep the schools going for a long time to come. We just hope that our enrollment goes up so that it will. Ok, more later, have a nice week! :-) Joan |

Hello Hajime Sensei and Meester Rene,
Well, Bonnie is on her way...and so I think hopefully she will arrive in Japan by next week. On the General discussion page I mentioned that Cyberfair 2001 is for sure going to happen! I am so glad! It really is a nice opportunity, like the ATT Virtual Classroom was, for collaboration among teachers and students from around the world. Our project will be great!

They want to show old buildings and interview people to get the stories about them. Some of our older buildings even have ghost stories about them!
They want to discuss our towns as they are now too, like, have a school section, a church or temple section, a sports section, and more.
Even, what are stores like and such! ;-)
One issue they brought up is....the cost of gasoline.
Here it is very high! We wonder if it is high prices like this all over the world...especially for Japan and The Netherlands
So, let's start the discussions now. ;-)
thank you Mr. Rene for setting this up.
