Yes, we should make a plan and carry out the plan. I agree with Rene's schedule. I think we will need much time for translations. At first, students of each schools must name the characters. Then the students will draw the characters with many expressions and actions. Let's begin!!

Hajime, I love the idea about the swallowing Internet.. we can use that as a start.. and it would be possible to let the visitor of the website be one of the 6 characters, by using his/her name in the story... that is possible with a special JAVA applet. We need to make a schedule on this Long Term Plans... like... all the audio files has to be ready in WAV format before end of November... all the stories have to be ready before the end of December, including a rough English translation for the Japanese and Dutch texts. All the translations (in English, Japanese and Dutch) have to be ready before the end of the month January. All the navigation files (the designing) have to be ready before the end of February and the testing of the whole site for CyberFair has to be done during the first week of March... after that we can finetune it for other contests. We really need to make a firm schedule, otherwise we keep walking in circles. Let me know what you think. Rene

I like the story of lost key. It may be interesting. How about this story; Three characters swallowed up in the internet by accident. They must come out by getting the lost key. For that purpose they must know the old things of three countries.

Hello again, after some days of sickness I am fine again. Ready to work on the project totally now. Hajime, you asked about the secret of the lost key.. well, it was my thought that the three (or six, no more) characters (kids) had to search for some objects as a kind of Quest. Why they have to search for lost objects? Welll, what about saving the world? To show real friendship between nations? During the search, the kids travel through the whole virtual town, and they visit some historical places/buildings like the cotton mill, the teylers museum, the temples of japan, etc. those articles have to be short and child friendly, otherwise students will surf away to another website. We need to come up with one central story... and Hajime would think about that? Let me make a kind of rough sketch of a drawing of the virtual town, and students can make it better after that. I will do that next week, during the vacation (one week vacation). Need to get ready for school now. Rene

Dear Hajime and Joan Because of some health problems I need to take some more rest. Of course I want to be involved in this wonderful project, and at the end of this week we will send the travel buddies to both of you!!!, but alas, at this moment I cannot be that active as the two of you. I hope I will be fine again soon, so I can join the project completely. I want to ask you to tell me what I have to do right now... and I will do it. Do you want me to record voices, or whatever...? At this moment, two things are not completely clear to me (but maybe that is my problem, maybe we already made a descission about it and I forgot, forgive me for that)... 1 - if we are going to make an entry for for instance CyberFair... who and how will be in charge for the website design and website building? 2 - if we do our local projects about the history of our hometowns and such... it will look like three seperated projects, without a common goal... and that will look not good in a contest... so how will we make from the three separated projects a childfriendly, very easy to read, with much nice drawings from children, and photos... how do we make it look like ONE JOINED project??? I have a suggestion for this... think about it, talk with your students about it... it came into my feverish mind last night... Let's design a virtual town! That virtual town will have two residential areas... the american area at the left of the river, and the japanese area at the right of the river... the river will float from south to North. Making this virtual town, we can have three friends... one lives in the american area (and the american kids will design their virtual town, with aspects from Cannelton).... one lives on a houseboat on the river (and my Dutch kids will tell you all about the river Spaarne -and surrounding important buildings- which floats through the center of our hometown Haarlem) and one child lives in the japanese area (and the students of Hajima will tell about his hometown or whatever we already discussed)... We also need to come up with a kind of story... to let the kids have adventures, which brings them from one end of the virtual city to the other end... and maybe the three main characters have to solve some problems, like finding the lost key of the Cannelton Cotton Mill. A kind of Quiz, Quest.... Let me know if this is something we can carry out to make our project one project... and if you like the idea of this virtual city More during the weekend, I will email you some digital photos then which I took the last few days from my students ! Bye for now Rene

Hajime and Rene, you both have wonderful ideas! I am going to place Rene's idea here, so we have it on the discussion site as well. I like both of your ideas...and so, maybe we can do both of them. Hajime, I like the idea of the story, sort of a progressive story, where all three schools write part of (chapters ) of the story. GREAT idea!!! more soon, Joan

The Golden Crane story we read was about a little boy who was orphaned when his fisherman dad was lost at sea after a terrible storm ...and an old man, an old fisherman became his guardian. Everyday they would see cranes flying overhead....and when the sun shone they looked golden. One day there was another storm and one bird was hurt or sick...so the little boy and the old man took the crane to their home and took care of him. Every day the bird got a little better. However, people started hearing about this magical crane that the boy and the man had, and pretty soon, the crane was famous, and people felt that it was a good thing to see the crane (good luck I think). However, there were important people from the country (like noblemen and even the Emperor) who decided they wanted it for themselves...and the Emperor sent a man to capture it. Well, in the end, the bird escaped and went up to the sky and the man and the boy went with the crane (like going to heaven). It was told a lot better than what I just tried to tell, of course. Have you ever heard of this story? :-) We found another book in our library with other Japanese folk tales...we will read it soon also. more in the next message. Joan

How about to let the students draw a character and stories? It is also the project of us. We will be sble to get the original characters from each school and get the story.

I like the idea from Rene. It seems to be interesting! Our three countries are divided by the seas. One or some characters from three countries adventure to get the lost key is also very interesting. But why do the characters want to get the lost key? Save an earth? Gathering a lost time? For returning this time from time travel?

Yes, we should make one site by all three schools. As for the "Golden Crane", could you tell me more information? Title of stories are sometimes changed. Is the story about the repayment an obligation?

Hello again, I want to tell you Hajime and Rene that we look forward to any packages you wish to send! We are very very very interested in studying and learning about your cultures.!!! We want to send you some stories that are from two groups here...one story from the Native Americans and one story from the Old West - a sort of folk story. We will do this soon too. We wish to hear about stories you want to share too. We found a book in the library, Hajime, that told of a Golden Crane! A magical Golden Crane! Have you heard of it? We also like the story of the boy who saved The Netherlands. It is on your school site, Rene, and it is great!!! We wish to maybe include these stories on our project site...but we want our site to be one site, and not three different ones...so we need to come up with a way to do this so that it does look like we are all on one project. :-) goodbye for now - more soon, Joan

Hello Amy!I need to introduce Amy to you two. Amy is a good friend and great teacher friend of our school. She is a good advisor to us and I told her about this project...she wanted to know more, so I told her to see our discussions we have so far. I know you won't mind. Amy, feel free to give us any advice or give us your opinion. We will consider what you say. ;-) Hajime, thanks again for the video of Bonnie arriving there! I am going to send it to Amy to see also. ;-) -Joan

In the old time, Japanese believe many Gods in many things. For example, there are God of fire, God of water, God of marriage, etc. When the people felt mistery, people found the God in there. I think people maight find the god also in the trees.

Hoi to you both.Joan, Great! You got the ISMF award! Congratulations! As for the title, I like the word "Echoes". It sounds very good. In Japan, we call it "Kodama". I don't know the details about the word, but the word came "ko" and "dama". "ko" means tree. "dama" came form "tamashii". It means soul or spirit. Then the "kodama" means the spirit from trees. Isn't it interesting?

Konnichiwa, and Hoi to you both! I just want to tell you that the Cannelton Cotton Mill website that my Media Club made last year has won the ISMF award....International Student Media Fair! It means that we went all the way with it in the Media competitions! We are so excited! What is really amazing is that it is not even finished yet, there is so much more we can add to it! Knowing this, makes me feel even more confident about the work we are doing with our project. I know it will be great! What name do you all have in mind for this project? I mentioned possibly something with the idea of Echoes....Echoes of...and each of us can have Echoes of and the name of our town or city or region...like for me it is Echoes of Cannelton. I wonder how we can use Echoes in the title for the whole thing? Echoes of ? Well, I cannot come up with anything for that yet. Maybe we do not need to go with Echoes in the title...just use it for the area that is the Past part of each of ours?? :-) Ok, more soon, Joan

I completely agree with you, Joan. You and your students should be better to study your area. And it is also good for us. Our city is old city, too. But we don't know many of things in here. It also means we should consider now and the future.

Our project can be something like Then and Now...we can have a Then space, and talk about our towns and countries in the past...and a Now space, where we tell about it now and its future. I do want to inform Hajime of some of what is going on here in Cannelton...Rene already knows most of this...but, our school, Cannelton City Schools, may not be able to continue after this year :-( The reason is because our numbers are so low (student numbers)...and the only way to keep the school going is with the money the state gives per student. So, because of our low enrollment, and also because of some money our school already owes our state government, we may not be able to keep going! :-( We are ok this year, and I hope maybe next year..but after that, who knows! So, this town of ours, Cannelton, Indiana may lose its school system....and that would be so very sad! Cannelton is the oldest community here in Perry County really I think...and the school building I teach in is 132 years old! Nearly 133! I think it will last forever! :-) I hope so anyway. so, there is lots of history here in this building and in this town. The townspeople hope to keep the schools going for a long time to come. We just hope that our enrollment goes up so that it will. Ok, more later, have a nice week! :-) Joan
