Yes,Hajime, if you want to translate it during winter vacation it is fine,,,the work is still the students, so it will
be fine. :-) We thank you so much for doing that. When school starts again after winter vacation, will you have
a different set of students? Gosh, our students certainly have enjoyed getting to know your students!!! Will you
have them again? How long does your winter vacation last? When does it begin? Do you want Bouken Totoro back before
the winter vacation starts? We do like the idea of keeping him for Christmas...however, if your students
need him to come back before their vacation starts that is fine. Let me know. :-)
We sure love showing him off!!! and he is a very interesting visitor, everyone who visits our classroom likes finding
out about him and about Jumbo! We finished taking Bouken Totoro home...he is now staying in the classroom
and enjoying himself with our activities. Jumbo is going home with a different student each night now.
We made sure to celebrate St. Nicholas ... Each travel buddy received a special pin that says Cannelton Elementary :-)
And...Jumbo got something a little extra, he went home with Whitney and she gave him a little stocking. In the morning
he had a Christmas tree pin and a special note from St. Nick!
Ok, well, I am going to send all the reports we have hopefully before Christmas to you both.
have a nice day both ofyou!!!

Ohayou gozaimasu, Joan and Rene. My students are researching Kaigenin the old temple near my school, Daikokuya the old inn, and some any other places.
But they are writting by Japanese only. How should I do? May I change it in the winter vacation? |

Hi both of you. I am sorry I have not been on here often of late...but here I am now.
Rene has his students writing reports on historical buildings in Haarlem. My students are researching some in Cannelton as well.
We are setting the due date to these as Dec. 22...am I right, Rene?
Hajime, your students also have some information about important buildings in your area, correct?
Oh, I want to mention again...how wonderful both of your videos and audio files are!!! (of your students singing!)
They really are great! ;-) They will be nice on our project website.
We are getting ready for the Christmas Holidays at school. Rene, I know your school is celebrating St. Nick's
tomorrow and Wednesday. Have fun! Let us know how everything goes. We will keep you all informed about our
travel buddies (Bouken Totoro and Jumbo) do with the holiday celebrations.

How are you both? I know you both have busy days coming up! How are your children, Hajime?? I hope they are all better.
Today my class has a visitor...he is Japanese, but has lived in the US for a long time. He is going to talk to my
students about Japan and he will write their names in Japanese. He is a friend of a friend of mine, I have
never met him. ;-)
I will take photos and let you know how it goes. What are the rest of you doing?
We should have the Dutch Fly song finished and sent to you soon.
bye for now,

Hi to both of you. I am sorry I have not been on here lately. Last week was totally crazy!!
I have been so busy, but I guess you all get busy too. I will be posting the holiday reports soon -
and we have some reports finished on the historical buildings. I like the idea of our travel buddies being an
active part of our project...and I am working on a simple website about this year's travel buddies
in my class - it is really amazing the wonderful photos and movies and posters and all that we have
exchanged so far since school started! We love this project!
more later,

Your son is very genius!! I also think that the MP3 file is the best way to send or use musics and voices in the internet. My students will play a music of crane in a big concert hall 17 of this month. We are planning to enter this music. And I think it should change to MP3. Many of Japanese traditional things are including a crane. For example, folding papers, stories, musics... |

Friends, a few points... at this moment I am not able to make other movies than the exe-files. Well, I also can make AVI, but these files are too big to put on the Internet. Next month I will get a new computer, and I will build in a video capture card with possibilities for editing and such. So... till then you have to do with the exe files, sorr for that. SECOND... concerning music / audio. Right now my son Frank (he is only 12, next week it will be his 13th birthday) is exploring the MP3 possibilities for me and we both concluded it would be possible to translate the WAV files into MP3. So, we bought a converting program and right now we are doing some experiments with it... MP3 audio files reduce the size of WAV files with 90% without losing notable quality... a normal audio file made in WAV willl have for instance about 300 KB... in MP3 it only will be 27 Kb... so what an opportunities for using more sound files on the project !!! I am willing to translate all the WAV files you make into MP3. All you need to do is to download a MP3 player (for free) from the Internet.. I will help you with that too. FINALLY... my students started with the project, they are working hard on getting materials ready,,, and we are thinking about the story for the 6 characters wandering through the virtual city.. more about that on the Project page. Have fun, I am glad I finally am well enough and having time enough to put all my energy to this project !!! Rene |

Hi all! I am back from Denver. The festival was nice, but a smaller crowd than I had expected...probably because of the cost of the trip to Denver. Hajime and Rene,
you can enter projects that your students do into this next year...they will be placing an entry form on the Internet site in the next month or so I think. They look for multi media projects like Hyperstudio, Powerpoint, slideshows like KidPix, and more. They also are taking websites. They have the entries divided into agegroups...it should all be explained on the website as I mentioned. Look at: www.aect.org and then go to the button that says ISMF...it should be updated in the next month.
The next awards ceremony will be in Atlanta, Georgia probably next fall. The deadline for entering media to this will be May 1 I think, but check the website to make sure. AS for this project we are workingon, I think we may need to get our thoughts together on what we want in it. Rene had some great suggestions and so do you Hajime. I like them all, so we need to discuss and decide.
Goodbye for now,
Have a great Monday!

As for our print, it made by Japanese software. Then even if I send to you this file, you may not open. The best way is using PDF. But it also may need Japanese font. I try to send you the same size by jpg image file, but it was very big...As for movie, Sorry to late to make the editing video. But it is difficult to catch Rene's movie. the file is exe file. It cannot be enter to any softwares. We can make movie file by many ways. The most basic way is using capture board. I made that kind of computer five years ago and it is running now. Second way to make movie file is also capturing by DV(IEEE1394). Many companies sell this kind of disktop and notebook computers these days. And the most easy way is using a degital movie. I'm very interested in your Student Media Festival. Please tell us about the details. |

Hello and Konnichiwa to you both! I am very sorry I have not been here for a few days. Hajime, I am not sure about editing video...maybe Rene knows more about that one. :-)
I really do like the videos you two have sent. Mine are from the little Sony Mavica camera...it can take still digital pictures or movies...but I can only make the movie until the floppy disk that is in the camera fills up...and that only takes a few seconds. Then I have to stop and get another floppy to put in it. So, it is not the best situation for doing digital video.
I am going to be out of town for a few days...until Sunday. I am traveling to Denver, Colorado to attend the International Student Media Festival. I am looking forward to seeing what Media projects have won across the nation.
I will be sure to tell you two how that goes. I will be at school Wednesday (today...in a few hours) and then I will go home and go to bed early, because I must be on the road by 3:45 a.m. to drive for an hour to the airport and catch an early flight.
Ok, well that is it for now, I certainly loved the latest paper you sent Hajime!!! The students want me to make prints for them, they will be showing it to their parents.
goodbye for now,

Konnichiwa,
Yes, I thought that the translation would really take some time, so yes, I understand that perfectly. Rene translated his students messages last year also. Just do what you have time to do, we enjoy this very much! I hope your studetns like the videos. I will be sending you a real video soon, my battery did not work yesterday for my video tape recorder, so all I could get ready for you was the mavica video. Ok, I need to go to bed now, just wanted to say thankyou again!

Konnichiwa! Hoi!
Hajime, your package arrived today, but I had a meeting all afternoon, so I was unable to be there when it came in ...so the substitute teacher had the class wait to open (I am glad, I wanted to share in the opening) so we will open the box in the morning and I will send you the Mavica video attached to an email. Hopefully you will be able to open it. I will also use a regular video camera...so I can send you the video in regular mail also. :-)
Have a nice day!
Rene is sick again! Actually, I think he never recovered from his sickness of last week. I hope, if you are reading this Rene, that you are feeling better soon!

Yes, we will be able to make the big three country video. As for NTSC, we Japanese use the same kind of video format with US. I want to know the kind of the tape of Mavica. But maybe it will be OK. |

Hajime, that is a wonderful idea!!! Of course, we want to do that! wow! Now, our video format is different than yours, isn't it? (I know the USA uses one different from the European one. USA uses NTSC? (I think that is what it is called) and Europe uses PAL? Well, I certainly will be sure to send you the video and hopefully you can do something with it. Listen, we use a Sony Mavica cam with movie file capability. Can you use that if I send it to you of Bouken Totoro? Could you include that in the big three country video? I hope so! wow! ok, well, that is my thought, I say, yes!!!!!!

I'm very glad that you like the video. The video was composed by premiere. But I used a software of Ulead before. They are very sumilar. I took a video at first. Then I entered to my computer three cuts from the movie. They are avi file. I edited the three avi files by premiere. Make two title and bind by any effects. It is not so big works. The original movie I sent you is very clearer, but I changed it vsry small size and it is very compressed. I changed the edited avi movie to rm file by Realproducer. It is free. I think the rm file is the smallest file of all. If you can send to me avi files or video tape, I will edit and mix with Jpapnese files, then I will make a two or three countries virtual movie. Isn't it interesting? |

I have only a movie option on the Sony Mavica cam we have at school. The video does not have the capability that I know of to do such a nice opening and ending...but, as soon as Boeken Totoro arrives we will take a small video of his arrival as well. ;-) more later, I am tired, it has been a long day. Konnichiwa and Hoi! I am so happy that we are doing this!
I cannot wait to share with the students the nice paper you sent, Hajime, and the nice photos too. Rene, remember the song you sang to my class a couple of years ago? It was about mountains and flowers? Where did you get that song? Where did it come from? That would be a good one to use I think, for us to teach to your students (well, your students may already know it) and for us to teach to Hajime's students, and then your students can maybe teach us (my students and Hajime's students)the Dutch Fly song, and we would like to learn a song of Hajime's . We found a Japanese song that is considered a New Year's song, but if you have a nice one you want us to learn, we can do that one instead or with this New Year's song. :-)
I mentioned in an email I think...I have had my students looking into the story behind some of our holidays...I am not sure what they are coming up with...but soon (this week) we should have some information for you on this. Also, we are gathering some background information on some of our more historical buildings in Cannelton, and we will get that information to you two soon also.
Have a wonderful week!

Yes, we call the paper "Origami". square pieces of paper are artfully folded to make animals, dolls, boats, etc. Kids in Japan sometimes play with this kind of paper.
Today, My students said that how to go to US? Does he have a air-ticket to go to US? Will he be able to walk to the School? Will he tell us about the school and the region he went? It's very interesting to talk about this project.

We will work on these more and then I will put the sound files online, and let you listen to them. :-) I have also asked my students to report about our major holidays, (small basic reports) so we can also offer this information...we will tell how Cannelton celebrates these: New Years, Martin Luther King's Birthday, Valentine's Day, President's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, Memorial Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Halloween, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. :-)
They will publish these soon.

Hi you two! I am so happy! We had a great interview with Charles Gerber. We really did, even though the batteries on our tape recorder quit during the middle of it, we still feel we got enough to have a nice bit for our project! We also have several nice old photographs to use, and we have a few photos he gave us to scan. :-) He has a small museum in his house, believe it or not, and he has invited my media club to come to see the relics there...many of them have to do with the history of Cannelton! He is 80 years old and doing very well. Hajime, Bonnie should arrive at your school by Monday or Tuesday. Let us know when she arrives. I had the students put her things together in the box...they put in some candies for your students and some pencil top erasers that are funny things like happy faces, moons, stars, pencils, boxes with ribbons, well, you will see. We hope you like what we sent. You have a surprise in there too, Hajime, from me :-). It is to confirm that Global Schoolhouse Cyberfair 2001 is definitely happening! We all make a great team! How do I spell the word for goodbye in Japanese? Syanora?? well, it is really more like: I will write more soon, Joan ;-) |

ThinkQuest information can be found on http://www.thinkquest.org . One problem for us... since we teach elementary schoolkids, we will not be able to join the ThinkQuest Junior contest, unless they will allow non-USA schools? However, we in Holland also organize ThinkQuest Junior, and that is open for all schools, as long as there is at least one Dutch school and the website has to be at least in Dutch (and more languages is allowed, but the complete site has to in in Dutch too). Joan and I coached a team for this contest: http://ontwikkel.thinkquest.nl/~jr035/
I can setup a free workspace for our project on Internet, no problem. Let me know. Rene |

I cannot even understand about the contest Cyberfair. How to enter this contest? When should we start and end this contest? Where should we make sites? Could you tell me more ? |

Konnichiwa, Rene!
How genius you are!
Students also look this page sometimes. However our students can't understand this page. I will explain all your messages to my students. |
